The Kingoonya and Areas Progress Association welcomes you to
Kingoonya - A way of life!
Kingoonya is a town that has had a varied history. A town that once was, was not and now is! Kingoonya began life as a Railway support town in 1915 and with the advent of finding abundant, high quality underground water it soon became an important place for the steam trains to re-fill.
Kingoonya also benefited from being on the Stuart Highway, the road that links North and South. However when the Highway was shifted about 40 kilometres east in the 1990s, the town suffered badly, especially when the Liquor licence was also removed to Glendambo.
All that changed around 2005 when Maria and Frosty moved in. The Kingoonya Waterhole Hotel was once again open for business, with meals, accomodation and fuel outlet that supplies diesel and unleaded 24/7. Sadly Frosty - Colin passed away and the Kingoonya Hotel had to shut it doors.
and John Taylor the owners of the Hotel building then had to set about finding the right person to once again re-open the Hotel. They have accomplished this task and the soon to be new licence holders are John Brett and Alistair Murray. Until the paper work for licence transfer is complete John and Deirdre Taylor will continue with John trading under their supervision.
Kingoonya also has a group of committed people who are dedicating their time to put Kingoonya back on the map with a record number of Progress Association committee members now numbering over 26 which is more than the actual town population which fluctuates between 5 and 15 depending on the season. There are big plans afoot for some great events and celebrations in Kingoonya in 2013 so please keep an eye on the website for details as they come available.
We also have a great friend in Robert J Munro the author of "Kingoonya -
A Way of Life" who explains for us the meaning of our town's name
HERE. Robert is currently doing the final update and reprint of the Kingoonya book so if you are interested in getting your hands on the final edition please contact the progress association as numbers will be limited.
Food and Fuel is available in Kingoonya but as yet there is no accommodation ready, however the new Hotel owners tell us that it is only a matter of days until the rooms will be ready. Stay tuned for more updates.
